July 1 - Bon Fete Jour Canada

Actually, I'm making that up - I have no idea what 'Happy Canada Day' is in French because they basically ignore Canada Day here.  I know ... shocking.   This was the lowest-key celebration I've ever seen and I've been to 4th of July celebrations in Ross!  I wasn't expecting a ticker tape parade but a little smthg would have been nice!  That said, I've spoken to a couple of Quebequois millennials and the general feeling is that staying a part of Canada isn't so bad!  They're not shouting their love of Canada from the rooftops but they're pretty happy to be counted among one of the world's most loved nationalities!

That said, we started our day with a visit to Quebec City's Natural History Museum.  Just like yesterday, the museum was awesome, inexpensive  and very sparsely attended!  Why is *everyone* not here?!?  We came for the kid-centric costume workshop and stayed for the interactive Dog & Cat and Nanotechnologies exhibits.  After a picnic in the courtyard with a live stage show - en francais - we had little time left for Canada day celebrations!  We walked from the NHM through lower old town (charming) to the Plaines of Abraham where the Canada day celebrations were happening.  We arrived an hour before the scheduled closing time and were bitterly disappointed to find that most of the best stuff was packing up.  Let's be honest, I was disappointed - the rest of them really didn't care.   We did a coupe of rounds in the obstacle course and called it good.  I wanted to celebrate my beloved Canada with beer and donuts and embarrassing t-shirts -- the whole shebang --- but, alas, it was not to be today!  We grabbed an uber and headed back to the hotel for our afternoon swim.

We took dinner in the hotel and had a lovely meal.  Afterwards, we decided to see the fireworks from the terrasse.  Although we could hear the fireworks, we could not see them so Charlotte and Jacqui ran ahead, in a light rain, in search of a suitable viewing location.  By the end of our trip back to the hotel, we were sprinting through a deluge and giggling all the way.  Stuff that would be a drag at home is often a highlight on vacation.

It took the girls a little while to get settled down for bed - likely the cookies and pillow fight did not speed things toward somnitude.  Although today did not go as  I had expected, it was fun for everyone none the less.  On to Montreal tomorrow.
